Workshop

Tokyo Photography Workshop (Nov. 20-24, 2017)

If you have a passion for photography, want to experience Tokyo, and take your photography to the next level, this workshop is for you.

Tokyo is absolutely one of my favorite cities in the world for photography. There is something about the city which inspires and motivates me to shoot photography. I love the Japanese Zen aesthetics, the crazy rush of people, as well as just how different the Japanese culture is from anywhere else in the world.

The first time I went to Tokyo in 2008, I was blown away. I was awe-struck by the intensity of the streets of Shibuya, the inspirational grittiness of Shinjuku, and the quiet and tranquil streets of Ueno. And honestly, I love to teach photography workshops where I personally like to shoot photography. Tokyo is one of those places.

I think a week in Tokyo is ideal. It gives you enough chance to explore different neighborhoods, try out some of the great Japanese food, as well as the chance to really feel part of the city.

I really want this workshop to not just be a photography workshop - but an experience.

That means, the focus of the workshop is not just to improve your photography, but for you to get to know Tokyo better.

If you’ve ever wanted an excuse to come to Tokyo, and your passion is photography, this workshop is for you.

The workshop format

The workshop format is going to be focused on helping you improve your photography over the week, to focus on a personal photography project, and have the chance for you to take your photography to the next level.

In the workshop, I will accompany you when shooting on the streets, giving you practical tips, advice, and encouragement— to push you outside of your comfort zone. I also will make sure to maximize your shooting time, and for you to spend as much time exploring the diverse neighborhoods of Tokyo.

In the workshop, you will have the opportunity to work on your own self-directed photography project, with feedback and guidance from me and your fellow peers in the workshop. You will therefore have freedom to check out different neighborhoods in the workshop like Shibuya, Akihabara, Shinjuku, Ueno, Harajuku, or any other of the cool trendy neighborhoods in Tokyo.

Furthermore, you will also have the opportunity to get real-time feedback on your photographs, and your progress during the workshop.

I think one of the most difficult things in our photography is to get honest feedback, which is constructive (teaching us how to make better photographs). I feel one of the best parts of the workshop is the opportunity to share your photographs with like-minded individuals, who foster a supportive community of learning and self-improvement.

The week

The workshop will start on a Monday, and end up a Friday.

Each day, we will start off by shooting in the morning, and getting feedback on our photos daily at coffee shops. This will give you an intense opportunity to not only shoot a lot, but get lots of feedback on your photos.

Furthermore, each night we will have dinner together - giving us more opportunities to talk about photography, life, and the chance for us to bond on a deeper level.

By the end of the week, you will edit down your project to your best 10 photos. These 10 photos will be a distillation of your best photos in Tokyo. Each photo will stand on its own, will be strong, and be an image you are proud of putting in your portfolio.

Consider this workshop as an opportunity for you to escape the craziness of life back home - perhaps your stressful job, your family life, and for the unique chance for you to put 100% of your focus and energy on your photography.
